How Waking Up Early Aligns With Your Core Values

Have you ever been stuck in a situation where you wanted to wake up early?

- The alarm was set 3 different times

- You went to bed early to ensure you got a good nights rest

- You didn’t do anything the night before so there was no way something else would affect your sleep.

… and then suddenly, you’ve slept through your alarms and missed your wake up time.

I’ve done it several times, in fact it happens to me constantly.

I’m not a fan of waking up early, but have tried different techniques in the past as I wanted to get more productive and utilize my time better- none of the techniques worked.

A few days ago, I had a friend ask me to drive them to the airport early in the morning so they could catch their flight. I set up 4 different alarms to ensure I would be able to wake up in time.

What happened? I woke up 30 minutes before even the first one even went off. And it wasn’t that groggy type wake up where you keep telling yourself you can wake up in 5 more minutes- I was wide awake.

I was pretty surprised that after all the techniques to wake up early, I was able to wake up to drive someone to the airport where I had reluctantly volunteered.

What enabled me to rise early was a core value system- I’d do almost anything for my close personal friends. There is no way I would let any of them down, nonetheless myself. Waking up late was not an option.

So I took it one step further- why couldn’t I wake up to go to the gym early in the morning, do some personal reading, take time out to think… it was because it was not aligned with my core values.

That is a slap in the face… my health, personal development, etc. were not part of my core value system. I am going through the process of questioning why these aren’t important to me and then fixing it mentally.

Who you are and what you do are two separate things.

Think back when you woke up naturally versus when you forced yourself to wake up with an alarm. The ones where you wake up naturally, was it part of your core values?

As humans, we can not violate our core values. The key is to find a way to make our intentions congruent with them.
