The Media is Poison
I’m not going to lie… I used to be a voracious reader and would scan and read anything that came across me. Just something I used to do, either to amuse myself or to see what the world was up to.
As I continue to grow personally and really try to create my own reality, I have literally almost stopped reading, listening, and watching the news. The media is poison for me.
Whether it is local, national, or global it seems I can not go on for more than 2 minutes before I come across something really negative. It is depressing. God bless the main stream news reporters and journalists, I am not sure how they keep focused and not let the “news” effect them.
I began an experiment in approximately August 2008 to consciously devoid myself of any type of negative news programs or mediums. As a financial analyst (nonetheless in the real estate sector), I was bombarded constantly by foreclosures, tightening of equity and debt markets, large gap expectations between buyers/sellers, etc. (the list can go on… AND ON).
So I stopped, I had enough. I questioned the need for me to listen to somebody else telling me “like it is”. We are all creators of our reality- everything is truly a mindset. In the midst of the worry, frustration, and despair there is another side. One of abundance and happiness.
As Eckhart Tolle always puts it, the present is all we have. So I had to ask myself, what was I feeding my mind with? After asking that question, I stopped reading and listening to most of the main stream news.
What did I do?
I created my own news. I focused in on finding who were those authors, speakers, and writers who were constantly pouring out positive vibes and messages.
-
For two weeks I listened to Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now” and "A New Earth” and nothing else.
-
Listened to podcasts on iTunes of inspirational speakers.
-
Repeated positive affirmations whether be at the gym, in the car, in an elevator.
-
Turned my laptop and car into a virtual classroom where only motivational CDs would play.
… so what happened? I became more driven and focused on what I truly wanted to accomplish and create. I didn’t get caught up in other people reporting other people’s sorrows. Sure, I can not avoid the main stream news, but I chose to hear it rather than listen to it- very important distinction.
…and guess what? The world didn’t end
If there were issues that I really wanted to know about or if something sparked my interest, I would either read the article or better yet discuss it with people whose opinion I respected.
Try this experiment- find a news topic that you really want to know more about. Listen to the main stream medias take on it. Then ask a friend, “What happened here?”. I am pretty sure you will find out which one made you feel worse easily.
As of this writing, I still do not watch, listen, or read much of the news. You may ask how do I know then what is going on? I simplified it, I go to www.drudgereport.com maybe 2-3 times a day and scan the headlines. Do this for a week and you can start making connections between different events. I rarely open an article, I just read the headlines.
The media is poison for your soul, nurture it with what makes you feel good and grow. Focus on creating your own reality, don’t let others tell you what reality is.
