Don’t Let Thoughts Escape

This is going to be a short post of an experiment I did today-

As the startup I am working on goes closer to its full launch, I have a million ideas spinning in my head. It was not on purpose, but I started writing everything down on index cards and then in a notebook. My best ideas and insights came when I was doing other things and I just wrote them down. No fancy programs or applications, just an old fashioned pen and paper.

Here is the direct effect of how it helped me:

  • Usually when an inspired though comes to my head, I like to play around with it- often leading me to get distracted from what I am doing in the present. Therefore, work not getting efficiently done. By recording my thoughts, I have time to get back to what I was doing and review it later allowing me to create the space to give myself fully on what needs to be done.
  • At brief intervals during the day, I just browsed the list and then got back to work…. the result? More focused, energetic thoughts and/or more thoughts that branched off ones I had previously. I can almost guarantee it has something to do with the subconscious at play. The mind is a beautiful machine, it automatically helps me find the answers when I am not thinking about them.

The next few days I am going to keep on following the same exercise. Also add in time constraints to see how well I do under self-imposed deadlines. Will share the results.

The Media is Poison

I’m not going to lie… I used to be a voracious reader and would scan and read anything that came across me. Just something I used to do, either to amuse myself or to see what the world was up to.

As I continue to grow personally and really try to create my own reality, I have literally almost stopped reading, listening, and watching the news. The media is poison for me.

Whether it is local, national, or global it seems I can not go on for more than 2 minutes before I come across something really negative. It is depressing. God bless the main stream news reporters and journalists, I am not sure how they keep focused and not let the “news” effect them.

I began an experiment in approximately August 2008 to consciously devoid myself of any type of negative news programs or mediums. As a financial analyst (nonetheless in the real estate sector), I was bombarded constantly by foreclosures, tightening of equity and debt markets, large gap expectations between buyers/sellers, etc. (the list can go on… AND ON).

So I stopped, I had enough. I questioned the need for me to listen to somebody else telling me “like it is”. We are all creators of our reality- everything is truly a mindset. In the midst of the worry, frustration, and despair there is another side. One of abundance and happiness.

As Eckhart Tolle always puts it, the present is all we have. So I had to ask myself, what was I feeding my mind with? After asking that question, I stopped reading and listening to most of the main stream news.

What did I do?

I created my own news. I focused in on finding who were those authors, speakers, and writers who were constantly pouring out positive vibes and messages.

  • For two weeks I listened to Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now” and "A New Earth” and nothing else.
  • Listened to podcasts on iTunes of inspirational speakers.
  • Repeated positive affirmations whether be at the gym, in the car, in an elevator.
  • Turned my laptop and car into a virtual classroom where only motivational CDs would play.

… so what happened? I became more driven and focused on what I truly wanted to accomplish and create. I didn’t get caught up in other people reporting other people’s sorrows. Sure, I can not avoid the main stream news, but I chose to hear it rather than listen to it- very important distinction.

…and guess what? The world didn’t end ;) If there were issues that I really wanted to know about or if something sparked my interest, I would either read the article or better yet discuss it with people whose opinion I respected.

Try this experiment- find a news topic that you really want to know more about. Listen to the main stream medias take on it. Then ask a friend, “What happened here?”. I am pretty sure you will find out which one made you feel worse easily.

As of this writing, I still do not watch, listen, or read much of the news. You may ask how do I know then what is going on? I simplified it, I go to www.drudgereport.com maybe 2-3 times a day and scan the headlines. Do this for a week and you can start making connections between different events. I rarely open an article, I just read the headlines.

The media is poison for your soul, nurture it with what makes you feel good and grow. Focus on creating your own reality, don’t let others tell you what reality is.

Random Acts of Kindness

I recently took the opportunity of using Valentine’s Day to perform some random acts of kindness. Here were the results:

Numerous scientific studies show that acts of kindness result in significant health benefits, both physical and mental. Here are some key points:

· Helping contributes to the maintenance of good health, and it can diminish the effect of diseases and disorders serious and minor, psychological and physical.

· A rush of euphoria, followed by a longer period of calm, after performing a kind act is often referred to as a "helper’s high," involving physical sensations and the release of the body’s natural painkillers, the endorphins. This initial rush is then followed by a longer-lasting period of improved emotional well-being.

· Stress-related health problems improve after performing kind acts. Helping reverses feelings of depression, supplies social contact, and decreases feelings of hostility and isolation that can cause stress, overeating, ulcers, etc. A drop in stress may, for some people, decrease the constriction within the lungs that leads to asthma attacks.

· Helping can enhance our feelings of joyfulness, emotional resilience, and vigor, and can reduce the unhealthy sense of isolation.

· The incidence of attitudes, such as chronic hostility, that negatively arouse and damage the body is reduced.

· The health benefits and sense of well-being return for hours or even days whenever the helping act is remembered.

· An increased sense of self-worth, greater happiness, and optimism, as well as a decrease in feelings of helplessness and depression, is achieved.

· Once we establish an "affiliative connection" with someone – a relationship of friendship, love, or some sort of positive bonding – we feel emotions that can strengthen the immune system.

· The practice of caring for strangers translates to immense immune and healing benefits.

Where Do Business Ideas Come From?

Received this fundamental question regarding business ideas from a connection I made on Facebook:

“I have the desire to start my own business. I have been racking my brain trying to figure out exactly what I want to do. I figure nothing’s coming to me because I’m trying to figure out the "how" which is not my job. So how do I allow the ideas to flow to me? How do I come up with a business idea if I’m not allowed to focus on the "how? I really feel that my truth is to share my knowledge of the Law of Attraction with others just as you are. It would be great to have someone to bounce ideas off of. Thanks.”

My answer below…

An Honest Look at My Month Goals

At the beginning of the month I set out some goals to accomplish. This is an honest breakdown of what I actually accomplished and what was not accomplished. I am always my toughest critic, but in my opinion, one of the best ways we can grow as a person is to realize that if what we are doing isn’t working then something needs to change:

  1. Finish Atlas Shrugged: Not Complete. Ayn Rand is one of my favorite authors and philosophers and it has been a goal of mine to try to read all her published pieces. While I wanted to finish reading Atlas Shrugged, I found I was forcing myself trying to get through the book without enjoying it. It was a self defeating purpose and not a worthy goal to go after. This small failure in achieving this goal emphasizes the fact that it is not always about reaching the end, but enjoying the process.
  2. Lose 15lbs: Not Complete. At its lowest, I had dropped approximately 8lbs and then it would jump up and down by 3lbs. I spoke to a trainer about this and stated that the way we were training, it was expected the weight would not drop significantly and would have variance on a day to day basis. While I am not a certified trainer, I am pretty disappointed by the results. It has been a slow process getting into shape and had a notion in my head that the results would come quicker. This is one issue that I will have to deconstruct my habits and regimen to figure out what I am doing wrong.
  3. Earn $1500 in gross profits solely online. Not Complete. In all honesty, I made under $5 from affiliate programs and advertisements. In assessing this “poor” performance in achieving this goal, there was incongruence between my stated goal and the goal I was really performing. I concentrated more so on generating traffic, blogging, and internet marketing rather than solely on creating revenue.

While I was not close into attaining this goal, I have learned and continue to learn throughout the process. New working opportunities have also been brought into my experience as a direct result of learning about the internet business world. I am only seeing abundance and good from.

  4. Make a minimum of 5 new contacts. COMPLETE

As this is the beginning of the month, I am focusing on two new goals to accomplish:

  1. Lose 15lbs,
  2. Start to create an online business.

Deconstructing Goal 1 and creating a plan for Goal 2 to follow soon.
