Finding Your Tribe

by Josh Opinion on January 11, 2009

One of my goals this month was to get 5 new contacts through networking. That goal is complete and it took approximately 3 days… and I got more contacts than I ever thought. The key to doing it? Finding your tribe. I sought out people who were like minded… it’s that simple.

I got the concept of “finding a tribe” through Seth Godin’s latest book, aptly named “Tribes”. He speaks about the importance of becoming a leader, creating value for others, and taking the initiative to stand out of the crowd and to stand by your thoughts.

We live in an age where the world has become much smaller thanks to technology, most importantly the internet. When I set out this goal, I initially thought I would have to start booking my schedule to attend networking events and seminars. The beautiful thing about the internet is that you can instantly find like minded people (whether it be for personal development, spirituality, fitness, etc.).

I used the following two sources to not only find 5 people who I could connect with, but to literally find hundreds:

  1. Twitter (www.twitter.com)- I first heard about this from a friend and later realized its reach from attending a meetup.com group. Twitter allows you to search for people who share your interests AND who actively talk about it. My searches included the key terms such as law of attraction, personal development, spirituality. I also entered the city where I lived to find others in my area. The results are outstanding… you will never find a group of more passionate people so fast an easily. You have instant access to thousands of great minds and the ability to share and learn from them by speaking directly to them.
  2. Facebook (www.facebook.com)- I’ve been a long time user of Facebook since my freshman year of college. I used it primarily to keep in touch with friends and use it extensively now that many of my friends have gone their own paths across the country. I opened another Facebook account to find people who use the law of attraction to create the life of their dreams. Facebook has an amazing tool that allows users to create groups and virtual tribes. I searched for law of attraction groups and immediately began friending people who had posted on such groups. The results were outstanding- I made connections with over 200 people in 2 days. I was even able to connect with 2 CEOs whose works impacted me a lot.

My buddy has a quote which is, “If your not living on the edge, your taking too much space in the middle.” Life is too short to live in compliance and complacency. I’ve forced myself to do different things to start achieving my goals… doing things out of my comfort zone… and the results are already starting to show.

Find your voice by finding your tribe…
